Update: Airdrie loses an Amazing Woman

Jane Russett chose to look on the bright side until the end.

The 2020 Amazing Airdrie Women nominee lost her battle with cancer in August.

“I embrace my cancer journey with an open mind and an open heart to be kinder to myself,” she said in her interview for the nomination in the spring.

“To make sure I see each day as a blessing and the blessings in every day. To live in the moment and make those moments magic.”

Russett was first diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2014. She underwent a right mastectomy and chemotherapy, as the location of the cancer made it impossible for her to have radiation.

In March 2018, the breast cancer returned with a vengeance. Russett was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and told it was incurable and had metastasize throughout her body. She was also informed that she had approximately three months to get her affairs in order.

After taking three oral chemotherapy pills for over a year, she started chemotherapy infusions in May 2019 and will continue to do so until otherwise advised by her doctors.

“I don’t know what lies ahead and that’s the exciting part because already I’ve had 20 months of amazing moments when I was informed, I’d only have three,” she said in April.

Karen MacDonald, Russett’s friend and nominator, said she has never met someone who was as loving, kind and selfless as Russett.

“Jane had the purest of hearts,” said MacDonald.

“When you had a conversation with Jane, she made sure you were OK even when she was having her own struggles. Jane made the most of each blessed moment on this Earth – laughing, doing and loving. She was a fighter to the very end. Jane was a born nurturer with a beautiful kind soul.”

airdrielife publisher and creator of the Amazing Airdrie Women Awards Sherry Shaw-Froggatt echoed MacDonald’s sentiments.

“We were very sad to learn of the passing of one of our Amazing Airdrie Women Jane Russett,” she said.

“Her powerful story and attitude towards her battle with cancer was inspiring to so many. We will remember Jane at the awards in November. Our condolences to her family.”
