The City of Airdrie is thrilled to announce the forthcoming opening of the 40th Avenue Interchange to QEII, a monumental transportation infrastructure project set to transform the region’s connectivity and economic prospects. The interchange will open to the public the morning of Oct. 13.
“The completion of the 40th Avenue and QEII Highway interchange will significantly improve travel for the thousands of commuters and commercial drivers who rely on this route to get where they need to go safely and efficiently. Alberta’s government is proud to have invested $29.6 million toward this important project along the QEII, one of Alberta’s busiest roads and a critical trade corridor for the province. This project will not only support Airdrie’s growing population, but also promote economic development in the region.” said Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors.
“We have long recognized the necessity of the 40th Avenue interchange to accommodate Airdrie’s rapid population growth,” said Mayor Peter Brown “With the city’s population surpassing 80,000 in the 2023 census, this interchange is essential for both current and future residents.”
By eliminating access constraints, the interchange paves the way for long-awaited land developments to proceed. An estimated 7,539 acres of land will become available for residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional projects over the next 30 years, propelling economic growth and prosperity for the community.
“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Airdrie residents, who have supported infrastructure development through their taxes, to developers who have contributed through levies and to Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors for the land purchase,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “This project is a testament to the community’s vision, cooperation and investment in a brighter future.”
“This project, valued at approximately $65 million, represents a significant milestone in Airdrie’s development,” said Adam Carroll, Project Manager, Capital Projects Office. “We are proud, in collaboration with EllisDon, to deliver this project on time and on budget.”
The strategic placement of the 40th Avenue interchange not only benefits Airdrie residents but also strengthens the connectivity between Airdrie and Calgary, facilitating daily commutes, access to employment, education and recreational opportunities.
