Beat the Winter Blues: Six Ways to Actually Enjoy the Cold Season in Airdrie

Story by Josie Randall

Winter 2024/25

Winter doesn’t have to mean staying inside and feeling gloomy.

Airdrie is buzzing with activities to lift your spirits and keep you active, social and engaged. Here are six ways to embrace the season and beat the winter blues:

  1. Try a New Sport

Step outside your comfort zone at the FREE Try-It-Day hosted by the Airdrie Nordic Club on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 273118 Rge Road 292. Cross-country skiing gear is provided for half-hour sessions, but booking ahead is recommended.

  1. Take in a Show

The Bert Church LIVE Theatre invites you to an unforgettable night of storytelling with Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? by Tai Amy Grauman on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. This Métis theatre performance spans seven periods of history, blending heritage and creativity. Tickets are $27 for adults, $23 for youth/seniors, and free for Indigenous attendees.

  1. Craft with the Community

Warm your hands and your heart at Knit Nights every Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Polka Dot Creek Yarn (3117, 2920 Kingsview Blvd. SE). Whether knitting, crocheting, felting or weaving, all are welcome to join this relaxing, creative gathering. Sip on a warm drink, work on your project and make new friends in a stress-free environment.

  1. Volunteer Your Time

Give back this winter by volunteering with local organizations. From assisting at community events to supporting causes close to your heart, Airdrie’s volunteer opportunities are plentiful. Check out Volunteer Airdrie for a list of options.

  1. Prep Your 2025 Garden

Get a head start on spring at the 2025 Seed Share Event, hosted by the Airdrie Horticultural Society on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at the Agricultural Centre, 97 East Lake Ramp NE. This free event welcomes everyone—bring seeds to exchange or simply pick up free seeds for your 2025 garden. It’s a great chance to connect with local gardeners, gather inspiration, and prepare for a fruitful growing season. No registration needed—just bring your enthusiasm for gardening.

  1. Meet new friends

Looking to expand your social circle? The Speed Friend-ing Event by Carty Party Planning offers women a chance to form meaningful platonic friendships in a fun, relaxed setting. Held at Airdrie Town & Country, this three-hour event features a speed-dating format (without the awkwardness) and plenty of coffee, tea, and treats. Tickets are $35—email cartypartyplanning@yahoo.com to join.
