The Indian Society of Airdrie (ISA) and Hands of Hope Calgary are working together to ensure no one in our city goes without food.
In February, the two organizations came together to create the Fight Against Hunger Initiative. Volunteers with the program distribute groceries at no cost to residents in need, at various locations in Airdrie, every Saturday.
“We have come across many people in Airdrie who are in basic need of food/groceries,” says Maulik Shah, founder of the ISA.
“We have decided to help them out regularly. We believe no one should go hungry.”
He adds that they have helped more than 750 families so far.
“Price for food increased by 9.8 percent on average nationally,” says Shah.
“It is estimated that food prices are up by 19.1 percent from 2018 to 2022. After Covid, inflation was at its peak and the rise in food prices could be contributing to more Canadians experiencing food insecurity. More people are living in food-insecure households and are at a greater risk of experiencing food insecurity.”
The 2025 Canada’s Food Price Report reads: “Looking ahead to 2025, we are expecting a family of four with the same demographic makeup to spend $16,833.67, an increase of up to $801.56 from last year.”
Each week, ISA and Helping Hands’ volunteers come together to set up at various locations such as community parks and parking lots of community buildings. Shah says anyone is welcome to come and get groceries from the program, no questions asked.
If someone is in need and does not have a way to reach the location, volunteers will do their best to deliver the food to the resident.
ISA is a registered non-profit organization that was started in 2018. The Society is dedicated to bringing communities together in the city of Airdrie.
“Our goal is to provide a platform for community members to support and help each other, regardless of religion, language, native place, or gender,” says Shah.
“Our long-term goal is to establish a cultural centre in the city, where we can come together to celebrate our heritage and tradition. Our mission is to provide support and assistance to all community members living or working in Airdrie. As part of our social service, we host many cultural events, where all are welcome.”
He listed a volunteer appreciation night, collecting winter jackets and shoes for those in need, and food drives as other ways the society gives back.
