Five Free Indoor Activities for Kids in Airdrie

Story by Josie Randall

Winter 2024/25

Looking for a fun and free way to keep your little ones entertained indoors? Airdrie has plenty of options to get kids active, engaged and social while keeping parents happy.

Here are five great places to check out during this cold snap:

1. Airdrie Public Library The Airdrie Public Library is more than just books! With multiple weekly drop-in events for all ages, it’s a fantastic place to encourage creativity, literacy and socialization. Whether it’s storytime, crafts or interactive play, there’s always something happening. Plus, it’s a cozy spot to spend a chilly day indoors.

2. Genesis Place Fun Place Got an active kiddo? Head over to Genesis Place and check out the Fun Place, a drop-in play area designed for children up to 12 years old. Infants and toddlers under four have a soft play space, while older kids can enjoy a climbing structure. For those needing a quieter environment, Sundays from 7–9 a.m. are designated sensory-sensitive times with no facility music. Remember to bring sticky socks or clean indoor shoes!

3. CrossIron Mills Dinosaur Play Park Located inside the CrossIron Mills north entrance, the Little Fossil Fun Zone is an exciting dinosaur-themed indoor play area where kids can climb, explore and interact with an engaging floor mat and structures. The play park is cleaned daily from 3:00–3:30 p.m., so plan your visit around that time.

4. Visit a Pet Store A simple yet fun outing is a trip to a pet store! Kids love watching fish swim, listening to birds chirp and seeing small pets like hamsters and rabbits up close. It’s an easy way to introduce them to animals without the commitment of a new pet.

5. Community Links Messy Play & More Drop-In This fantastic free program offers a creative and social outlet for kids aged 0–5 on Mondays through Wednesdays and for children up to 8 years old on Thursday evenings. Held at Community Links (211, 125 Main St. NW), Messy Play & More encourages imagination, sensory exploration, and parent-child connection. No registration is required, but spots fill up quickly!
