Rainy day? Where to play in Airdrie

Story by Stacie Gaetz

Spring 2025

We all know how finicky Mother Nature can be in May in Airdrie.

Just because the day is gloomy and wet doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. There are plenty of ways to keep yourself and your family entertained on chilly spring days while you dream about the warmer weather to come.

Get in the Game

As soon as the clouds come out, you might start hearing “I’m bored!” from your kids. Just because you can’t (or don’t want to) get outside in the rain doesn’t mean you’re stuck at home. Check out one of Airdrie and area’s arcades or gaming lounges. Apple Creek Arcade is located at Apple Creek Golf Course just north of Airdrie and includes more than 60 games that span the gamete of the latest and greatest to mom and dad’s favourite throwback relics. ¡Glitch! Gaming Lounge in Airdrie offers 12 high-tech virtual reality stations, a library of more than 50 games and escape room experiences, arcade games, pool tables, console gaming, board games, darts, and private karaoke rooms.

Grab a coffee and a treat

The Airdrie coffee scene is also stepping up its game. Although the big chain cafes are great, there is nothing quite like sitting down at a small locally owned coffee shop or bakery and reading a book or taking out your laptop to get some work done. Check out Ground Press Coffee and Books or La Table Haute Pastry for great coffee, sweet treats and relaxed atmospheres.

Hit the Lanes

Shamrock Lanes is a long-standing institution in Airdrie. It offers 12 lanes of bowling, including five-pin and 10-pin bowling with bumpers available. They also feature glow-in-the-dark bowling and other activities like video games and pool tables. Their food and drinks are very reasonably priced. You can’t beat an affordable afternoon at the lanes.

Airdrie Public Library

The Airdrie Public Library is more than just books! With multiple weekly drop-in events for all ages, it’s a fantastic place to encourage creativity, literacy and socialization. Whether it’s storytime, crafts or interactive play, there’s always something happening. It’s a cozy spot to spend a chilly day indoors.

Visit a Pet Store

A simple yet fun outing is a trip to a pet store! Kids love watching fish swim, listening to birds chirp and seeing small pets like hamsters and rabbits up close. It’s an easy way to introduce them to animals without the commitment of a new pet. Some stores allow you to visit a cat in a separate room, while others offer a glimpse at less-common pets like chinchillas and hedgehogs.

Don’t let a rainy day dampen your spirits. Get out to one of these great spots in Airdrie and let fun take your mind off of the dreary weather outside.
