Nose Creek Valley Museum temporary home to Speculative Fictions Art Exhibit

Story by Stacie Gaetz

Summer 2025

Nose Creek Valley Museum will feature the contemporary art exhibition Speculative Fictions until August 27.

Speculative Fictions draws upon themes present in the literary genre of the same name, where artworks prompt viewers to consider the transformative potential of wonder, awe, and mystery.

Speculative Fictions offers a rich, immersive experience that invites reflection and curiosity. Whether you’re a seasoned art lover or just looking to explore something new, this exhibit has something to offer,” says Mackenzie Strey, curatorial assistant at Nose Creek Valley Museum.

“We feel that these TREX art shows are a great way to bring unique art pieces to people that might not normally get to see them and makes it so we can offer something a little different from our normal content.”

This exhibition was curated by Ash Slemming and is being circulated by TREX SW through the Alberta Society of Artists.

Viewers are invited to embark on a journey into the realm of imagination where limitations on what is possible dissolve, and multiple portals open into the speculative edges of our shared consciousness.

Speculative Fictions features a curated selection of 19 artworks from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts provincial collection, each encouraging the kind of regenerative curiosity needed in today’s uncertain times.

“Each piece offers a unique perspective and adds to the imaginative atmosphere of the exhibit,” says Strey.

Artists include Ernesto Bonato, Janet Cardiff, Wendy Ehlers, Nathan Grimson, Liz Ingram, David Janzen, Rodney Konopaki, Calvin Kruk, Amy Loewan, James McDougall, Leanne Olson, Jacques Rioux, Leonard Simpson, and Jim Westergard.

Strey says the museum hosts travelling exhibits several times a year.

“They’re an important part of our programming because they allow us to share diverse perspectives and artistic practices with our community,” she adds.

“This is a rare opportunity to experience thought-provoking, imaginative art right here in Airdrie.”
