Illuminating Community: Experience the Magic of Diwali Mela in Airdrie

Story by Stacie Gaetz

Fall 2026

As autumn days grow shorter, a vibrant celebration is set to fill Airdrie with warmth, light, and togetherness. On November 1, the Indian Society of Airdrie (ISA) invites residents from all walks of life to gather at the Town & Country Centre for the 4th annual Diwali Mela. From 5:30 to 9 pm, this free family-friendly event promises an unforgettable evening of cultural performances, shopping, delicious treats, and community connection.

Diwali, widely known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant celebrations of the Indian subcontinent. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The lighting of lamps during the festival represents the removal of negativity and the welcoming of positivity, prosperity, and happiness. While celebrated across Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist traditions in unique ways, Diwali in multicultural societies like Canada offers a wonderful opportunity to share cherished traditions with friends and neighbours.

“The purpose of hosting Diwali Mela is to celebrate one of the world’s most significant cultural festivals while creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to connect, learn, and celebrate together,” says Maulik Shah, an organizer and volunteer with the Indian Society of Airdrie.

“Airdrie is a diverse and welcoming city, and events like Diwali Mela help foster cultural understanding, strengthen community bonds, and create a sense of belonging for everyone. We want families, friends, neighbours, and newcomers to come together and experience the spirit of unity, joy, and inclusion.”

Hosted by the ISA — a volunteer-driven non-profit dedicated to promoting cultural diversity, social connection, and inclusiveness — the event reflects the group’s guiding motto: “Together We Build, Together We Serve.”

This year’s celebration places a strong emphasis on multicultural participation and family engagement and Shah said they expect approximately 400 attendees from Airdrie, Calgary, and surrounding communities.

Guests will enjoy vibrant cultural dance and music performances, vendor shopping stalls, and exciting prize draws. Attendees can also savour free refreshments, including soft drinks, laddoos, and cookies. Families will especially appreciate the free sparklers for the first 100 children and complimentary Diwali craft.

According to Shah, the true magic of the evening lies in its welcoming atmosphere.

“One of the biggest highlights will be the vibrant cultural performances combined with the community celebration of Diwali’s message of unity, hope, and light,” says Shah.

“Everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of cultural background. Diwali Mela is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, build friendships, and experience the rich traditions of one of the world’s most cherished festivals.”
