How you can help make the holidays brighter for Airdrie families

Story by Stacie Gaetz

Fall 2025

The Airdrie 1st Club Holiday Hamper Program is in full swing. The program helps families, seniors, and individuals in Airdrie experience a joyful holiday season. One hundred percent of donations go directly to those in need, thanks to the volunteer-driven nature of the club.

“The Hamper Program is the Airdrie 1st Club’s most prominent and well-known initiative,” says Jo-El Buerlen, president of Airdrie 1st Club.

“It has been part of the city of Airdrie for nearly 50 years. Its success involves dedicated volunteers, business support, and corporate and community sponsorships. Whether you donate, sponsor, or spread the word, you’re helping uplift our community.”

Sponsors receive a wish list and provide gift cards, treats, and wrapping supplies based on family size. Drop-off is due by December 10 at the Hamper Depot (location to be provided in sponsor packages).

What to Include in Your Package:

  • Holiday treats (ie: store-bought wrapped chocolates)
  • Gift cards for presents
  • Grocery gift cards
  • Wrapping supplies

More than 330 families received a hamper in 2024. Buerlen says they are anticipating 380 hampers this year and have 61 volunteers who will help put them together and distribute them to those in need. Members dedicated nearly 3,000 hours of volunteer time to make the 2024 hamper program successful.

The holiday hamper program is 100 percent organized by volunteers with an annual budget of approximately $200,000 and an administrative yearly expense of less than one percent, says Buerlen.

“The Airdrie 1st Club is a non-profit organization with no affiliation with religious or government organizations,” she adds.

“Members work hard to bring this program together, and we volunteer at other events to raise funds and solicit funds from within the community, businesses, and corporations.”

Money may be tight this holiday season, so if you are unable to sponsor a whole hamper, consider giving a gift card, toy or small monetary donation.

“Gift cards are the most impactful in this program,” says Buerlen.

“We want our recipients to be empowered to purchase the things they need. We also find it challenging to find gifts for men and teenagers. We accept almost everything at the donation centre and ask for no used or perishable items.”

Each year, the Airdrie 1st Club reviews the Government of Canada’s poverty guidelines and the annual cost of living to determine who is eligible to receive a hamper.

“This year, we adjusted the income eligibility for hamper recipients, removed the produce portion, and increased each family’s gift card amount to reflect these changes.”

Applicants can apply online at airdrie1st.com until December 5.

“We all know that the cost of living continues to increase, making things even harder during the holiday season, so many families and individuals appreciate that extra hand up during the holidays, and we know we can count on Airdrie to extend their hands out,” says Buerlen.
