Awesome (and affordable) day trips you will love

Story by Stacie Gaetz

Summer 2025

Summer in Alberta is beautiful—long sunny days, rolling fields, and that breathtaking stretch of mountains on the horizon. Some of the best adventures are just a car ride away and don’t require maxing out your summer budget.

Whether you’re itching for a family outing (so you can stop hearing “I’m bored!”), a romantic escape, or just want to get out of town for the day, Airdrie is the perfect launch pad for some seriously awesome and affordable day trips.

Here’s your curated guide to summer escapes, each one under a two-hour drive and with options to suit every style of explorer.

  1. Drumheller – Dinosaurs, Hoodoos & Canyons

Distance: 1 hr 30 min

Drumheller is Alberta’s badlands gem. This barren landscape feels like stepping into another world—one where dinosaurs once roamed and ancient rock formations (called hoodoos) tower over the red earth. Visit the Royal Tyrrell Museum (kids under six are free), take a selfie with the world’s largest dinosaur, and don’t miss a walk through the Horseshoe Canyon. Pack a lunch and enjoy one of the many scenic picnic spots.

Budget tip: Most hiking trails and viewpoints are free, and museum admission is reasonable, especially if you choose the family rate.

  1. Cochrane – Ice Cream & Riverside Strolls

Distance: 45 min

If you love lazy riverside walks and the best ice cream you’ve ever tasted, Cochrane is calling. Grab a cone from MacKay’s Ice Cream (a staple since 1948), and explore the Cochrane Ranche Historic Site, perfect for a gentle hike or picnic. The quaint shops and art galleries downtown add to the charm.

Budget tip: Free parking and plenty of free-to-enjoy green space. Don’t forget to stop and skip some stones in Ghost Lake.

  1. Banff – Yes, It’s Free Until September!

Distance: 1 hr 30 min

Did you hear? Banff National Park has waived entrance fees until September! That means you can enjoy jaw-dropping mountain views, glacial lakes, and world-class trails for free. Hike Tunnel Mountain, rent a canoe at Vermilion Lakes, or stroll Banff Avenue for some souvenir browsing.

Budget tip: Pack your own food to avoid pricey meals and arrive early to snag free parking.

  1. Canmore – The Chill Mountain Alternative

Distance: 1 hr 20 min

Canmore is Banff’s more laid-back cousin. Less crowded but equally stunning, it’s full of charming cafés, local markets, and scenic walking trails like the Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk. The Three Sisters viewpoint is a must for photos, and the atmosphere is so relaxed, you might think you are on vacation.

Budget tip: Many trails start right from town—no park pass needed!

  1. Red Deer Area – Unexpected Fun & Outdoor Thrills

Distance: 1 hr 30 min

Red Deer might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think about a road trip, but it should be! Discovery Canyon is a free tubing river park (bring your own tube), and the Kerry Wood Nature Centre offers hands-on fun for kids and peaceful walking trails. Golf fans can find several affordable courses in the area, and there are hidden gems like Alberta Sports Hall of Fame too.

Budget tip: Many attractions are low-cost or donation-based.
