Every Thursday at Nose Creek Elementary, something amazing happens. Students who once struggled with confidence and school attendance are now thriving—all thanks to the power of mentorship.

Becky Harper, a Learning Assistant (pictured above), and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area In-School Mentoring Coordinator Binta work together to bring teen mentors and elementary students together, creating a space where kids feel supported, encouraged, and have fun with activities like reading and games.

Take one shy student, for example. He used to feel anxious and had a hard time getting through the school day. But everything changed when he was paired with a mentor. Now, he looks forward to Thursdays, greets people in the hallway, and feels more confident than ever. His mentor didn’t just help him with reading—they helped him believe in himself.

Mentorship is about more than just academics—it’s about making kids feel seen, valued, and like they truly belong. When you become a mentor with BBBS Calgary, you’re not just changing one child’s life—you’re helping to build a stronger, more connected community.

Want to make a difference? BBBS Calgary needs YOU to join their community of mentors and make a lasting impact, not only in a child’s life, but in YOUR community.
