Short Legs, Big Energy: Highly Anticipated Corgi Races Return to Century Downs

Story by Stacie Gaetz

Summer 2026

Get ready for the most delightful race on four short legs. Following a massive debut last year, the highly anticipated Corgi Races are returning to the track at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino on July 4.

The event promises a day of high-energy fun, community partnership, and unforgettable family entertainment. What started a decade ago, with the chihuahua races, as a singular celebration of small-dog speed has rapidly evolved into a regional phenomenon.

“After the success of our chihuahua races, we expanded into dachshund racing three years ago and introduced corgi racing last year in partnership with the Calgary Corgi Racers,” says Josh Vetter, marketing coordinator at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino.

“The corgi races quickly became our biggest event of the year and one of the most fun days we have hosted at the track.”

The high-stakes sprint takes place on the main racetrack over about 30 yards. The logistics require a true team effort from the dogs’ human companions: one owner holds the eager corgi at the starting line while another waits anxiously at the finish line, making for a fun and exciting race experience for everyone watching.

“Last year, we had to cap the registration at 100,” says Vetter.

“We had to do about seven or eight races to determine the winner.”

For those looking to see if their pet has what it takes to take home the crown, pre-registration is mandatory. Anyone who wants to sign up their corgi for the races can do so here.

Beyond the fast-paced track action, the day functions as a celebration of the local pet community. Century Downs has partnered with Petland and Airdrie Puppy Pals to provide free giveaways. Attendees can also support great local causes by welcoming Parachutes for Pets and The Animal Rescue Foundation. For the human spectators, the event will feature appetizing apron samplings from Happy Dogs wine and Four Dogs Brewing.

“The event is family friendly and free to attend,” adds Vetter.

There are activities for the whole family, admission is free, and you can help support great local organizations.”

Children are welcome in the upstairs area of the building. Due to the large crowds drawn by the event’s past success, organizers highly recommend coming early to secure prime viewing positions. Guests interested in attending are encouraged to book their reservations to secure a spot by emailing reservations@cnty.com.

The Corgi races will take place after the live horse racing at approximately 4:15 pm, although the exact time will be confirmed closer to the event date. Mark your calendars for an afternoon of pure, low-to-the-ground racing excitement that you won’t want to miss!
