Celebrate Black History Month in Airdrie

The Airdrie Black Community is proud to announce a series of exciting events in celebration of Black History Month. Throughout February, the community will come together to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians, and also equip members of the black community with resources to further aid their excellence as residents of Airdrie.

 

ABC Black History Gala and Awards Night

On Sunday, February 2, 2025, the Airdrie Black Community will host its inaugural Black History Gala and Awards Night. This prestigious event will honor outstanding individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Black community in Airdrie. The ticketed event will feature live music, cultural performances, awards recognizing the contributions of key institutions of duty in Airdrie, as well as the excellence of great black individuals and black-owned businesses in Airdrie. The evening will also feature addresses by distinguished guests, and a keynote address by the President of the Airdrie Black Community.

Award Categories and Recipients

  • the Airdrie RCMP as a recipient of the Airdrie Duty & Service Distinction Award, for their excellent dedication, service and role in ensuring and promoting peace and order in the great city of Airdrie;
  • the Airdrie Fire Department as a recipient of the Airdrie Blazing Star Award, for their commendable commitment to protecting and safeguarding the great city of Airdrie and its residents from fire, hazard, and harm;
  • the Airdrie Food Bank as a recipient of the Airdrie Community Hero Award, for their continued dedication to feeding and empowering residents of Airdrie;
  • Kingsley Ogieva as a recipient of the Airdrie Black Hero Award, for his heroic and courageous act of kindness on Highway 2 on November 27, 2024, as a black truck driver working out of Airdrie who risked his life to save a trapped truck driver;
  • Ever Bright Complex Needs Support Services as a recipient of the Excellent Black-Owned Airdrie Business Award, for the organization’s outstanding resilience in a competitive environment, and continued successes in spite of systemic challenges, while contributing to the economic growth of the great city of Airdrie;
  • Ifeoma Stella Okonkwo, Olukemi Daniel-Ojo, and Simisola Obasan as nominees for the ABC Volunteer of the Year, award recipient to be named at the event;
  • Christabelle Sonu and Bright Adelegan as nominees for the Airdrie Resident of Distinction, award recipient to be named at the event; and
  • ABC Excellent Leadership Awards for excellent members of ABC Board & Management.

ABC Black History Legal Education Seminar

In partnership with the Royal Canadian Mount Police (RCMP) in Airdrie, the Airdrie Black Community will host a Black History Month Legal Education Seminar on Sunday, February 16, 2025, as a significant part of our ongoing efforts to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in Airdrie. This free seminar will provide valuable information to members of the Airdrie community on legal rights and resources, with a focus on critical issues at the intersection of race, law, and social justice. It is also important to note the significance of the date, being in the Family Weekend. The essence of this is to bring families together, and provide the opportunity to engage with legal experts on tough questions, lingering concerns, and access resources and support, for a more equitable tomorrow for us and our young and rising stars.

ABC Black History Financial Literacy Seminar

On Friday, February 28, 2025, the Airdrie Black Community will also present a Black History Month Edition of our monthly Financial Literacy & Wealthbuilding Mastermind Seminar, in partnership with seasoned black financial experts within our community. This informative seminar will provide practical tips and strategies to the Airdrie community, for managing finances, building credit, and achieving long-term financial stability. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with financial advisors and access resources and support.
