It can be tough for moms to find somewhere to fit in.
Luckily, a group in Airdrie is hoping to create a thriving community for local mothers to connect, find support and laugh in shared experiences.
Airdrie Mom Walks is celebrating their two year anniversary in Airdrie having grown rapidly, attracting moms from all walks of life.
“I started Airdrie Mom Walks after I had my daughter,” says founder, Alex Sigurdson.
“Having a baby is such a drastic life change and can be very isolating. You may not be isolating yourself on purpose, but as a first time mom I found it was so hard to leave the house.”
The concept of Airdrie Mom Walks was inspired by a friend in California, who had also started organizing mom walks in her area. Sigurdson brought the idea to Airdrie and quickly found it resonated with the local community.
“Any mom can join,” she says. “Whether you have a newborn, twins, toddlers, or grown-up kids—everyone is welcome.”
The walks have become a vital resource for moms seeking social interaction and friendship during what can often be an isolating time.
Airdrie Mom Walks now boasts over 750 members on social media, with weekly walks typically attracting 10-15 participants.
“We have at least one-to-three new moms every single walk, so anyone who joins won’t be alone as a newbie,” Sigurdson says.
For many, these walks provide not only exercise and fresh air but also the invaluable opportunity to share in the joys and challenges of motherhood.
“I think it’s so important for moms to get out with their kids for multiple reasons. One, it’s always great for humans to get outside and get some fresh air and vitamin D. We all feel refreshed and healthier when we do this. Two, I think it is important for humans to get that social connection. Meeting other people, learning from them and getting to connect is what helps us grow and thrive.”
