Ethan Myson knows what it feels like to be the quiet kid — the one unsure of where he fits in. Today, he’s the mentor helping kids find their place.

In high school, he led his hockey and volleyball teams with confidence. But it wasn’t until he stepped into a mentorship role that he discovered a whole new kind of leadership.

As a teen mentor with BBBS Calgary, Ethan returned to his former elementary school — not as a student, but as someone younger kids could look up to.

One of his mentees wouldn’t take off his hood. Too shy. Too self-conscious. But week by week, Ethan built trust. Gave him space to lead. Let him feel seen. By the end of the year, that same kid was inviting others to join their games — smiling, confident, and stepping into his own leadership, too.

“You don’t know how much of an impact you can make on a person until you try,” Ethan says.

Now in university, Ethan credits mentorship as a key moment in discovering who he is — not just as a teammate, but as a changemaker.
