For many residents, a trip to a local craft market is a pleasant weekend activity. However, for those behind Crafting for Community: A Mother’s Day Craft Market, the upcoming event is a vital lifeline for local mental health accessibility.
Now in its second year, the market is returning with a dual mission: celebrating local artistry and ensuring that no one in the community has to face mental health challenges alone due to financial barriers. The event will take place at Unit 106, 3 Kingsview Road SE on May 2 and 3 from 10 am to 3 pm.
The market is the brainchild of Dave’s Gift Society. According to Michelle Neustaedter, executive director of the society, the proceeds from the market serve a critical purpose.
“The money goes to support individual’s mental health services through subsidizing the cost, allowing them to attend counselling and find health and healing,” says Neustaedter.
Last year’s inaugural event was a successful starting point, raising approximately $1,000 for the cause. This year, the stakes and the ambitions are higher. The organization is looking to significantly expand its impact on the community.
“We are really hoping to triple the attendance and revenue of last year,” says Neustaedter.
To reach that goal, the market has assembled a diverse array of local talent. The aisles will be filled with unique, handmade goods ranging from traditional crafts to modern 3D-printed designs. Attendees can expect to find local artisans who create their own unique products like crocheted stuffed animals, acrylic paintings, water painting, jewelry, and more.
While the shopping is a major draw for those looking to pick up a one-of-a-kind Mother’s Day gift, the event is designed to be a full family experience. The market will feature a variety of activities specifically for children, including slushies, face painting, and popcorn. One of the highlights for the younger crowd is the opportunity to create a personalized gift. Children can participate in decorating ceramic plant pots, complete with a baby plant, to give to their mothers.
Neustaedter notes that the market’s atmosphere is tailored to be inclusive and high-energy. Ultimately, the event is about more than just commerce; it is about strengthening the local social fabric.
“Come out to learn more about Dave’s Gift Society and how we are changing the mental health landscape in Airdrie and surrounding communities,” she adds.
“This event is in support of mental health promotion and advocacy. Let’s destigmatize and get people on the journey toward good mental health.”
