Airdrie has a gift for families this time of year — an array of places where the season practically begs to be photographed. Whether you prefer your holiday memories wrapped in twinkling lights, dusted with fresh snow, or anchored by a familiar jolly fellow in red, the city offers settings that feel tailor-made for the family album.
Think of it as a winter tapestry: a parade that glows down Main Street, parks that hold their breath under frost, and community gatherings where music drifts through the cold like warm spice.
Check out some of Airdrie’s most picturesque holiday backdrops (from classic festivities to tucked-away winter corners) so you can gather your favourite people, lift the camera, and capture the season exactly as it feels: bright, cozy, and wonderfully fleeting.
Santa Claus Parade
This one might seem a bit obvious, but it can’t be beat! Snap a picture of your kids’ genuine smiles as they enjoy the lights, music, dancing, and a visit from the man in red himself on Main Street. Stick around after the parade for some additional holiday fun at the Airdrie Public Library put on by the non-profit organization Airdrie Parades.
East Lake Park
For family photos with icy water views, East Lake Park is a must-visit. The park’s peaceful lake and charming bridges provide a serene setting surrounded by frost-covered trees. The wide-open spaces make it easy to set up a family photoshoot surrounded by a blanket of pure white snow.
Festival of Lights
Another obvious choice, the famous Festival of Lights is the perfect place for family photos. Take a festive picture at Nose Creek Park among thousands of twinkling lights. Then warm up by the fire pit, take a ride on the train or a spin on the skating rink (weather dependent). Don’t miss Santa, who will attend the event on December 3, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 20 and 21 from 7 to 8 pm.
Jensen Park
Jensen Park offers a unique setting for your winter family photos. With its 1930s-style gazebo and large, mature trees, this park combines vintage charm with the beauty of sparkling ice. The historical plaques throughout the park provide a fun way to explore Airdrie’s past while capturing some unforgettable moments with your loved ones.
Santa’s Wonderland at Bass Pro
Santa Claus has made his festive return to Santa’s Wonderland at Bass Pro Shops – a free Christmas event that has become a much-anticipated and cherished holiday tradition for families at CrossIron Mills Mall. This wonderland features studio-quality photos with Santa, festive crafts and holiday giveaways. Registration is required at basspro.com.
Coopers Crossing Boardwalk
The boardwalk at Coopers Crossing is one of Airdrie’s hidden gems for photography. The creek turns into a skating rink in the winter so why not get your family on skates for the photos? Head there when the sun is highest for the best lighting and capture some authentic giggles as you kids glide and slip on the ice.
Photo with Santa at Inspire
Capture a moment of holiday magic at Inspire’s Atrium! The community is invited for a free, posed photo opportunity with Santa at the new public library space on December 18 from 4:30 to 8:30pm. No registration is required and picture opportunities are available on a first-come basis.
Summerhill Creek
For a quieter, more tranquil location, Summerhill Creek is ideal. The long snowy pathway and stunning views of the water and white trees create a peaceful setting for family photos. With benches placed along the pathway, you can easily gather the family for a cozy portrait surrounded by nature’s winter’s display.
CPKC Holiday Train
The colourful and brightly lit CPKC Holiday Train Nose Creek Park will roll into Nose Creek Park on December 9 at 5:15 pm. Snap some photos of the fam listening to performers Jade Eagleson and Teigen Gayse. Don’t forget your food donation!
Skate with Santa at Genesis Place
Join as Santa makes a stop at Genesis Place and takes to the ice for a free public skating event. Families are encouraged to bring their camera and pause for pictures with Santa on the ice on December 22 form 1 to 5 pm.
