Lace up for change with the Know Where to Turn Run

Story by Stacie Gaetz

Spring 2025

Strap on your sneakers and stretch those muscles because the Know Where to Turn Run is taking place at Ed Eggerer Park on May 4.

The event (formerly known as The Run to End Family Violence) has been taking place for nearly a decade, with a brief hiatus during the pandemic. This year marks the third year under the new branding.

“I would encourage anyone to take part because this event offers countless ways to support and engage with your community,” says Elizabeth Wyczynski, community relations specialist with North Rocky View Community Links.

“Whether you choose to run, walk, volunteer, cheer, attend, donate, or sponsor, there are so many ways to contribute to this important cause. It’s an amazing gathering of the community coming together for a meaningful purpose, and the energy is incredible – it grows every year! Join us and be a part of something special!”

The run offers four events to choose from: a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and a Kids Race.

“By signing up as a participant or volunteering, individuals can make a direct impact on their community and help create a healthier and safer environment for everyone,” says Wyczynski.

Event organizers started the run to honour the memory of Airdrie’s Andrea Conroy, who was taken from her children, family, and community in an act of domestic violence on February 21, 2012 at the age of 33.

This run was founded by an Airdrie community collaboration to raise much-needed funds and facilitate free services and supports for adults and children experiencing domestic violence. All proceeds raised will fund these free services and supports at North Rocky View Community Links.

Last year’s event attracted 260 runners, 100 volunteers, and numerous spectators and vendors. If you are moved to help but prefer not to run, consider volunteering for the cause.

“We currently have 43 volunteers registered, but we are in great need of additional volunteers, especially for road crossings. Those interested in volunteering can visit our website at knowwheretoturn.ca and click on ‘Volunteer’ to register,” says Wyczynski.

This year’s goal for the event is to raise $50,000 for North Rocky View Community Links. Since 2004, Community Links has focused on the prevention of family violence including strategies to stop violence and giving individuals the skills to develop respectful and healthy relationships throughout their lifetime for a strong and safe community. One-to one support as well as educational and support groups complete the wholistic wraparound service for safety, support, educational and emotional needs.

“I would like to emphasize that the funds raised are crucial for supporting family violence programs at Community Links,” says Wyczynski.

“This is an important social issue in our community, and Community Links offers a variety of program and services for those affected by family violence. It is only through the support of our community that we can continue to provide these essential services. Your participation and contributions make a significant difference.”

The event will also include several other activities that those who are not running can take part in. There will be multiple vendors on site, including Mr. Mikes and a food truck, music, a face painter and more.

“If you’re not running or volunteering, it’s a great opportunity to come and be a part of the energy and cheer on those who are racing!” says Wyczynski.
