Spread Cheer: 7 Simple Acts of Kindness to Brighten Christmas Day

Story by Josie Randall

Winter 2024/25

Christmas Day is a time for warmth, togetherness, and giving. While the season often brings grand celebrations, it’s the small, thoughtful acts of kindness that can truly brighten someone’s day.

Here are a few simple ways to spread holiday cheer:

  1. Shovel or Salt a Neighbor’s Sidewalk
After a fresh snowfall, surprise a neighbor by clearing their driveway or walkway. It’s a thoughtful gesture that helps others stay safe and shows you care.
  2. Donate Extra Food
If you find you’ve overbought for your holiday feast, consider donating the excess to a local food bank or someone in need. Even a small bag of non-perishables can make a big difference.
  3. Call a Friend or Family Member
Sometimes, the best gift is simply offering your time. Reach out to a friend or family member, especially those who may be spending the holiday alone. A quick call can remind them they’re loved and thought of.
  4. Leave a Small Gift for a Delivery Person
With so many packages arriving at our doors, consider leaving a small treat or note of appreciation for your delivery driver. A little acknowledgment goes a long way.
  5. Share Holiday Cards
If you have cards left over from your own holiday greetings, pass them on to someone who might not expect one—a co-worker, your postal carrier, or even a stranger you meet during your day.
  6. Pay for Someone’s Meal or Coffee
If you’re out for a meal or coffee, anonymously pay for the order of the person behind you. It’s a simple way to spread holiday cheer without expecting anything in return.
  7. Offer to Walk a Friend’s Dog
If you know a friend or neighbor who’s busy with family celebrations or simply could use a hand, offer to take their dog for a walk. It’s a kind gesture that gives them a break and ensures their pet is cared for.
