The Indian Society of Airdrie is excited to host its annual “Diwali Mela” on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at the Town & Country Center from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Mela is a vibrant, family-friendly event that showcases traditional Indian culture through performances, food, art, and merchandise stalls. As always, the event is free and open to everyone, offering a welcoming atmosphere for Airdrie’s diverse communities to come together and celebrate.

Diwali, often referred to as the festival of lights, is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and some Buddhists across the globe. The holiday symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, making it a time for renewal, reflection and celebration.

“Diwali is not only a time for joyous celebration but also reflection, renewal, and the strengthening of community bonds,” says Maulik Shah, with the Indian Society of Airdrie.

“It is a festival that brings together people of various faiths and backgrounds, fostering a sense of unity and shared cultural heritage.”

This year’s Diwali Mela promises to be a lively celebration.

“We are looking forward to the cultural performances, food, and merchandise stalls,” Shah says.

The event is expected to be well-attended, with many from Airdrie’s growing Indian population, now estimated to be around 1,500 families, joining in the festivities. “

We are anticipating a full house this year,” says Shah.

“A large number of members from different communities gather and enjoy the festival together.”
