Cabin Fever event a cure for the winter blues

Story by Jim Zang

Winter 2022/23

If you’re suffering a bout of the winter blues, help is on the way in the form of the City of Airdrie-sponsored Cabin Fever event.

The Family Day long-weekend of fun kicks off on Saturday, February 18 from noon ‘till four at Chinook Winds Regional Park with an afternoon of activities planned including tobogganing, outdoor skating, cross-country skiing and even a snowbank treasure hunt. You can also try your hand at axe throwing, be dazzled by dog demonstrations and groove to the electronic dance tunes of DJ Asher.

If you want to relax and refuel, grab a hot dog and cocoa in return for a donation to the Airdrie Boys & Girls Club and cozy up around one of the firepits, or sample some flapjacks in support of the Food Bank with a dessert of maple taffy in snow. You can even bring your own marshmallows, sticks and s’mores fixings.

The festivities continue Sunday, February 19, with the Winter Picnic in the Park at Nose Creek Park from 3 to 6 p.m. Bring your own winter-friendly snacks to enjoy around a firepit, skate to the sounds of DJ on Ice at the amphitheatre and let the kiddies say “Hi” to some of the costumed characters in attendance.

Wrapping things up on Monday, February 20 is Funky Family Day Skate at Plainsmen Arena. With laser lights, fog machine and retro vibe, this all-ages event is a far-out event for the whole family. Tickets are $10 per person in advance with limited tickets at the event for cash or credit card only (no debit).
