Nature-Inspired Crafts to Celebrate Fall Together

Story by Josie Randall

Fall 2024

Story brought to you by Shane Homes

Fall is the perfect season for crafting, with inspiration just right outside the door.

Using natural treasures found in backyards or on nature walks around Airdrie, you can create simple, beautiful decor and keepsakes together.

Here are four ideas to get crafty with nature.

Wood Texture Stamps

Start by cutting a thick branch into small sections, around 12 cm wide, and sand each piece until smooth. Using a hammer, press patterns into the wood’s surface with items like a nut, screw, or nail—anything that makes a distinct shape. The deeper the indent, the more defined your stamped design will be. After finishing the pattern, give it a final sand, then grab some paint and stamp away.

Pinecone Bird Feeders

Start by tying a 10-inch piece of twine securely around the top of a large pine cone, forming a loop for hanging. Spread a thin layer of peanut butter over the pinecone scales, then roll it in birdseed until fully coated. For easier cleanup, assemble your feeder on a paper plate or cookie sheet. Once finished, hang your pinecone outdoors and watch as local birds enjoy their tasty treat.

Beeswax Leaf Garland

Begin by collecting flat, colorful leaves and pressing them in a book for a day or two. Melt beeswax in a double boiler until there’s enough to submerge each leaf, then dip each leaf (including the stem) quickly into the warm wax, letting any excess drip off. Place the waxed leaves on parchment to dry. Once ready, clip or tie them to twine to form a garland, and hang it where light can shine through to bring out the leaf colors.

Twig Tree Luminaries

Start by trimming twigs to fit around a clear plastic cup, with each piece sized to meet at a point at the top, creating a teepee shape. Glue four twigs evenly around the cup (like the 3, 6, 9, and 12 positions on a clock), then continue adding more twigs between these points to fill in the gaps. Once dry, place a flameless votive candle or fairy lights inside, creating a cozy glow that’s perfect for mantels or centerpieces!
