The Chinese tile game Mahjong is often thought of as something played by older generations in a quiet atmosphere. But an Airdrie mother/daughter duo set out to change that image, creating a new social hub in the process.
Darlene and Stacey Savage launched the Mahj Social Club late last year after recognizing a beautiful opportunity to blend the strategy game with a lively social atmosphere. Mahjong, particularly American Mahjong, is currently experiencing a massive resurgence across North America.
For co-founder Darlene, watching the club grow from a single spark into a thriving local staple has been an incredible journey.
“The resurgence is deeply tied to people craving offline connection and a more intentional alternative to a bar or other traditional ‘hangouts,’” says Darlene.
“The other thing that Mahjong has going for it is the cognitive benefits it provides. When you’re playing Mahjong, your brain is focused and active.”
For those unfamiliar with the game, Mahjong is a tile game with the object of matching 14 tiles to a predetermined winning Mahjong hand, as listed on the National Mah Jong League annual card.
The club has purposefully shaken up the traditional imagery of the game, taking it out of quiet living rooms and dropping it straight into some of the community’s most beloved hotspots.
Mahjong is played regularly at Balzac Craft Brewing Company, giving participants a chance to sip local craft beer while masterfully plotting their next tactical move. The club has also hosted an event in partnership with Seven Saints Boutique.
“We all need connection and community. More so now than ever. This is more than just a game. More than just shuffling of the tiles. It is a game that gives us ‘feel-good’ chemistry,” adds Stacey, Darlene’s daughter.
“We offer events that bring strangers together in a ‘low-risk’ scenario.”
Through introductory and advanced lessons, lively social open-play sessions, and targeted partnerships with vibrant local venues, the duo is successfully bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you are a beginner trying to figure out a joker from a dot, or a seasoned strategist looking for a challenging table, Savage ensures that no one is left feeling isolated or out of the loop. The Mahj Social Club provides an easy entry point for everyone, making sure that learning the game is just as much fun as winning it.
“Mahjong has undergone an interesting resurgence over the last ten years, particularly down in the United States,” says Stacey. “It was perhaps originally thought of as a game associated with older generations. We often hear, ‘My grandma used to play this,’ but now, it seems that this game is connecting with much younger generations for a variety of reasons. We think this has to do with the fact that at its core, Mahjong is built on social connection.”
Many of their guests are discovering Mahjong for the very first time, completely captivated by the beautiful weight and click of the pieces. Meanwhile, others are happily returning to a game they learned many years ago, now completely reimagined in a contemporary, lifestyle-forward way.
The Airdrie Mahj Social Club is exploring the revival of Mahjong as a modern lifestyle and social trend. Savage and her daughter have demonstrated how grassroots clubs can spark meaningful community and connection, answering the question of why this classic game is resonating so deeply with a new generation.
