Get ready to party like a pirate or play like a princess at the 5th Annual Pirate and Princess Gala!
The gala is created for the entertainment of preschool and young primary school-aged children, and all others still touched by a bit of magic. All attendees are encouraged to dress up in pirate or princess-themed costumes.
The magical event is also a fundraiser for two local charities: Volunteer Airdrie and The Sober Friends Society.
“I proposed the concept of the gala after working with the local Children’s Wish Foundation for two Princess Tea Parties that were held in the Didsbury arena,” says Ruthanna Friesen, chairperson for Airdrie’s Annual Pirate & Princess Gala.
“It’s meant to be an all-inclusive magical afternoon playing dress-up where kids can be whoever they want to be and whoever they are.”
She adds the mid-winter timing of the gala is no coincidence.
“We chose to offer the gala in February because historically, it’s a lean time for children’s entertainment. The magic of Christmas has passed and everyone is getting tired of winter.”
Dave Maffitt, past chair of Volunteer Airdrie, says last year’s gala was supported by 65 volunteers.
“Our event has brought families together from all over southern Alberta,” he adds.
“At a past event, we had one guest that drove three hours with her granddaughter to attend and said it was well worth the trip, and she would do it again!”
Mike Loughman, founder and president of The Sober Friends Society, says the funds raised help pay for a full year of paint nights and other outings.
“Also, it brings our community together for a fun family day, which is great, and it gives volunteers a chance to give back,” he adds.
“It’s incredibly fun, brings lots of volunteers together and although it takes months of planning and running around, it is totally worth it to see those smiles!”
The event features kids’ games, face painting, crafts, a temporary tattoo parlor, magician, Princess Tresses & Pirate-Hair-Messes hair salon, DJ, singing, dancing and more exciting activities.
Parents can enjoy the silent auction, raffle, a 50/50 draw, door prizes and live entertainment including appearances of well-known princesses and not-so-scary pirates who will interact with the children.
A light, buffet-style meal is also available during the gala at the Town and Country Centre on February 23 from 12 to 4pm.
