The Airdrie Board of Youth Affairs (ABYA) is calling for young changemakers to join for the 2024-2025 year.
Youth between the ages of 13 and 22 who are residents of Airdrie are encouraged to apply by October 1st. This unique opportunity allows young people to step into a leadership role, represent their peers, and contribute to the growth of their community.
“Youth are the future of our growing city and they are integral in ensuring a well-rounded and prosperous community. In the past, our voices and our perspectives haven’t always been considered in decisions and initiatives, leaving out a significant portion of our population,” says ABYA Chair Madison Broussard.
“Youth deserve to be heard and we can bring so much value and creativity to discussions and decisions as our community grows and evolves.”
ABYA, which was first formed in 2005, aims to give youth a voice in the issues that affect them and the community at large. Over the years, the board has evolved into a vital advisory committee to Airdrie’s City Council.
From initiatives like raising awareness about vaping to their involvement in the “Mayor for a Day” program, the ABYA continues to make a significant impact.
“We are looking for youth who consider themselves ‘changemakers,’ who care deeply about our community and want to leave a positive imprint,” says Broussard.
As the bridge between Airdrie’s youth and City Council, the ABYA advocates for the well-being of young people in the city.
Membership requires dedication, leadership and collaboration. Members are expected to attend meetings, participate in community events and offer guidance to fellow board members.
“I wanted to have a voice in the issues affecting my environment and peers,” says Broussard.
“The ABYA is a welcoming and supportive environment for youth to grow their leadership skills and make a meaningful impact.”
